Mumbai, August 8, 2025 — Actress and climate advocate Bhumi Pednekar, together with her sister, lawyer-turned-entrepreneur Samiksha Pednekar, has stepped into India’s clean-beverage space with the launch of Backbay, a new-age mineral water brand grounded in wellness and sustainable design.

Naturally Pure from the Himalayas

Backbay’s debut product, Backbay Aqua, is bottled right at the source in the Himalayan foothills. The naturally alkaline water benefits from glacial filtration, enriching it with vital minerals like magnesium, calcium, and potassium. Packaged in a women-led facility in Himachal Pradesh, the brand seeks to deliver purity with transparency.

Sustainability at Its Core

Championing eco-conscious consumption, Backbay opts for FSC-certified paperboard cartons featuring plant-based caps made from sugarcane resin. These lightweight, fully recyclable cartons are designed to withstand India’s heat without chemical leaching—offering a functional and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plastic bottles.

Driven by Values

Bhumi Pednekar emphasized the brand’s roots: “When I looked at the bottled water space, it felt outdated and lacking in trust. Despite being the most essential beverage, water hasn’t seen meaningful innovation… Backbay is not just a product. It is a cleaner, safer choice — one that prioritises people and the planet.”

Samiksha added that the bottled water sector is dominated by vague claims and plastic pollution. “With Backbay, we saw a clear gap… This wasn’t just a business opportunity; it was a chance to simplify choices in a cluttered space and bring clarity to something as fundamental as the water we drink.”

Backbay Aqua is set to hit shelves and online carts by the end of August 2025. The brand’s distribution strategy includes omni-channel access through Swiggy Instamart, Zepto, Amazon, Nature’s Basket, Foodstories, and its official D2C platform.

With India’s premium and functional hydration market projected to grow at a 13.2% CAGR through 2028, Backbay’s entry taps into rising demand for clean-label, eco-friendly beverages.

Summary

Backbay introduces a refreshing innovation in India’s beverage landscape—Himalayan-sourced alkaline mineral water in planet-friendly packaging. Backed by the vision and influence of Bhumi and Samiksha Pednekar, this launch marries wellness, sustainability, and design. The brand’s upcoming omni-channel rollout positions it well to capture the growing conscious-consumer market.
