Vivek Oberoi Files Delhi HC Suit Against Fake Accounts and AI Misuse

Bollywood actor and entrepreneur Vivek Oberoi has filed a civil lawsuit in the Delhi High Court to protect his personality and publicity rights after allegedly finding widespread misuse of his identity online. He claims that several people and entities are wrongly using his name, image, voice and likeness without permission, especially through fake social media profiles and misleading AI-generated content.

According to the petition, fake accounts on platforms like Instagram have been set up using his pictures and name. Additionally, unauthorised merchandise such as posters, T-shirts and postcards bearing his image are being sold on e-commerce platforms. The suit also raises concerns about AI-generated “deepfake” and morphed videos that show Oberoi in false, offensive or defamatory contexts, potentially misleading the public and damaging his reputation.

Oberoi’s legal team has named companies including Collector Bazar, ZoomMantra and Indiancontent, along with unknown defendants referred to as “John Doe”, and is seeking a permanent injunction to stop further misuse. He has requested that infringing content be taken down and that unknown individuals engaging in violations also be covered by the court order.

During the brief hearing, the court indicated that it would pass orders in the matter, underscoring how seriously the judiciary is taking issues around personality rights and new technology.

Oberoi is one of several public figures who have turned to the courts in recent times to tackle the misuse of their identity online — including cases involving other actors and personalities.
