Rajpal Yadav Surrenders to Tihar Jail After Delhi HC Rejects Relief in Cheque Bounce Case
Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav has surrendered at Tihar Jail in Delhi after the Delhi High Court refused to grant him further relief in multiple cheque bounce cases against him and his wife. The court’s decision ends his efforts to delay the legal process and forces him to serve his six-month sentence ordered in the case.
What Led to the Surrender
- The court had earlier directed Yadav to surrender by 4 pm on February 4, after he failed to comply with its previous orders related to the cheque bounce dispute.
- Yadav’s lawyers had argued that he was trying to arrange money — including about ₹50 lakh — to pay the complainant and asked for more time. The Delhi High Court rejected the plea, saying it “cannot create special circumstances” for someone because of their background or industry.
- Despite offers to pay partial sums and settle with the complainant M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd., the court insisted that compliance with its surrender order came before any discussion on payment.
About the Case
The matter goes back to a 2018 conviction in a cheque bounce case — Yadav and his wife had issued dishonoured cheques linked to a settlement obligation that arose after a loan taken in 2010. A Sessions Court upheld the sentence in 2019, but the High Court temporarily suspended it in 2024, urging genuine settlement efforts. However, delays and missed undertakings led to the surrender order being enforced.
Yadav appeared in person before the court on Thursday and was taken into custody in line with the directive. The legal proceedings continue in parallel with attempts to resolve outstanding dues.
