Mira Nair Unveils First Look of Amri Featuring Priyanka Chopra and Anjali Sivaraman

Acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair has finalised casting for her much-anticipated biographical drama titled Amri, which tells the story of Amrita Sher-Gil — one of India’s most iconic modernist painters known for her bold imagery and trailblazing artistic voice. The film’s first look has been unveiled, generating excitement in both Indian and international film circles.
In the lead role, Anjali Sivaraman — recognised for her work in Bad Girl and the Netflix series Class — will portray Sher-Gil, bringing to the screen the artist’s creative restlessness, cultural duality and uncompromising spirit.
The ensemble cast also includes Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Madame Azurie, Jaideep Ahlawat as Umrao Singh Sher-Gil (Amrita’s father), Emily Watson as Marie-Antoinette Gottesman (her mother), Anjana Vasan as Indira Sher-Gil, and Jim Sarbh as Karl Khandalavala. Chopra Jonas is also credited as an executive producer on the film.
Set across Hungary, France and India in the early twentieth century, Amri will trace Sher-Gil’s artistic journey from European training to pioneering modernist work in India, reflecting the cultural and emotional forces that shaped her life and legacy before her untimely death at 28.
Production is nearing completion, with filming having taken place in multiple international locations, and the project is widely viewed as one of Nair’s most personal and artistic ventures — given Sher-Gil’s long-standing influence on her own filmmaking sensibility.
