“People Are Judged for Not Speaking English” – Vishal Jethwa’s Honest Confession

Director Neeraj Ghaywan’s much-anticipated film Homebound has just been nominated as the official Indian nomination for the 2026 Academy of International Film in the Best International Feature Film category. Following the recognition of the film at the Cannes Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival, the movie has attracted the world to the remarkable job of narrating the Indian story and the outstanding acting of Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor.
Recently, in a press conference, the cast discussed the personal impact of the film. Actor Vishal Jethwa opened up on how the experience made him overcome his insecurities and how he learned to embrace himself.
Also, by the Way of the Language, Not by the Talent.
Having been very frank, Jethwa disclosed that language in India has been a stumbling block to many people, especially when English is perceived as a symbol of status.
“In India, when one cannot talk in English, he or she is judged. Individuals who speak English are seen as being in a different category, and those who speak only Hindi are looked down upon. Perhaps you are as bright and worthy as anybody, but you are not taken as a consequence of your tongue,” he said.
The actor revealed that this silent rift is one of the factors that leaves individuals who do not speak English feeling marginalised in both social and professional areas.
Vishal Jethwa Facing His Own Fears
Vishal Jethwa confessed that he was not exempt from this feeling of insecurity. He cited that authenticity was the most important when doing Homebound. “Had I attempted to act like a so-called cool or so-called classy guy, I would not have been included in this film,” he said in a very sincere tone. Referring to Homebound as a life-changing project, Jethwa said the film was the reason he has the strength to embrace himself without having to conceal himself behind insecurities.
The Road to the Oscars
The hopes are high with India officially submitting Homebound as its Oscar submission. The movie has already received international acclaim due to its multi-dimensional narration and emotive performances. Now, Indian audiences are impatiently waiting for its release on September 26, 2025.
