Renowned filmmaker Kabir Khan is celebrating a special milestone as his blockbuster action-romance Ek Tha Tiger completes 13 glorious years. Released in 2012, the Salman KhanKatrina Kaif starrer not only smashed box office records but also gave birth to what is today known as the YRF Spyverse, one of the most ambitious cinematic universes in Bollywood.

Marking the occasion, Kabir Khan shared a heartfelt note along with behind-the-scenes pictures from the film’s sets. Taking a nostalgic trip down memory lane, he credited producer Aditya Chopra for envisioning a genre-defining leap for Hindi cinema. The director recalled how the film went on to become a turning point in his career and a landmark in Bollywood storytelling.

Laying the Groundwork for a Cinematic Universe

In his note, Kabir Khan expressed gratitude to Aditya Chopra for entrusting him with the massive project. He revealed that Chopra wanted Ek Tha Tiger to redefine how Hindi cinema approached action, scale, and storytelling. “Tiger Tiger Tiger… Thirteen years ago, Ek Tha Tiger with the megastars Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif roared into cinemas with the biggest opening in Indian cinema at that time. Not just as a blockbuster romance-thriller, but as the spark that ignited what would become the now-famous YRF Spyverse,” Kabir wrote.

What made Ek Tha Tiger stand out, he emphasized, was its blend of real action and human emotion. Unlike many action-heavy films, it relied on minimal VFX, giving the stunts and chase sequences a more authentic feel. According to Kabir, the “realness” of the action contributed significantly to the film’s long-lasting impact.

The filmmaker highlighted how the story of two spies—Tiger (Salman Khan) from India and Zoya (Katrina Kaif) from Pakistan—caught between duty and love, struck a chord with audiences. Over time, that love story became the seed for a full-fledged cinematic universe, later expanding with Tiger Zinda Hai, War, and Pathaan.

A Blockbuster Beginning

When Ek Tha Tiger released in August 2012, it broke several records, becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film of the year and one of the biggest hits of the decade. Its global appeal, high-octane action, and chemistry between Salman and Katrina made it a cultural phenomenon. Today, fans and critics alike acknowledge it as the heartbeat of the Spyverse, which has now become one of Yash Raj Films’ most profitable franchises.

Kabir Khan noted that working with Salman Khan was also a memorable first. “It was my first collaboration with Salman Khan – a collaboration that would go on to create films I will always be very proud of,” he said. Though he admitted there were creative differences on set, he recalled them as part of the process of making a film with a superstar.

Salman Khan’s Next Moves

While Kabir Khan fondly looked back at the past, Salman Khan is busy preparing for the future. Buzz in the industry suggests that the superstar may collaborate with renowned Telugu director Harish Shankar. Though unconfirmed, the project has created quite a stir among fans. Interestingly, Ravi Teja’s name is also being considered, leaving audiences guessing about the final casting decision.

Meanwhile, Salman has already locked his next big project—Battle of Galwan. Inspired by the 2020 clash between Indian and Chinese troops in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley, the film promises to be a gripping patriotic drama. Salman will be seen alongside Chitrangda Singh, while the ensemble cast includes Zeyn Shaw, Ankur Bhatia, Harshil Shah, Heera Sohall, Abhilash Chaudhary, and Vipin Bhardwaj. Based on true events, the film revisits one of the deadliest border clashes in over four decades.

A Legacy That Continues

As Ek Tha Tiger marks 13 years, the film continues to hold a special place in Bollywood’s history. It wasn’t just another Salman Khan entertainer; it was the cornerstone of a cinematic experiment that grew into a sprawling spy universe. From redefining action in Hindi films to setting a benchmark for franchise-building, Ek Tha Tiger has left a lasting legacy.

Kabir Khan summed it up best when he wrote, “Ek Tha Tiger was the first heartbeat of a franchise that changed the rules of the game.”

With the Spyverse still thriving and Salman Khan gearing up for fresh projects, the story that began in 2012 remains far from over.
